Welcome to my imperfect email.
As always, every week, we’ll send a question that will help you reflect on your own imperfect life, inspired by this week’s episode.
It’s time to put on the kettle, and settle in for a Vulnerabilitea House with none other than icon Bryan Brown.
And while you’re at it, maybe grab some popcorn, it’s always polite to have popcorn when in the presence of a movie star (or so they say).
Enjoy the show,
Bell

what has been the scariest moment in your life?
We'd love to hear your answer to this question. If you're in the mood to get vulnerable and share your writing, send it through.

The Value of Being Alive
With Bryan Brown
Not to be dramatic, but Bryan Brown is an Australian icon of the silver screen.
Cast in over 80 film and tv projects throughout his career, working with people such as Jennifer Aniston, Ben Stiller and Sigourney Weaver (possibly biggest name drops we’ve ever had), Bryan was all set for a life of numbers and mathematics before he allowed himself to be guided by joy.

Joining Josh and Ryan in the Vulnerabilitea House, Bryan answers the question, ‘what has been the scariest moment of your life?’
Covering all elements (literally), Bryan recounts a near drowning, and a close call with flames, before he was grounded by his first experience with anxiety.
Chatting to Josh and Ryan about what it felt like to have his perception of mental health changed, Bryan talks about becoming comfortable with vulnerability, what it means to be a man, and how he was able to ask for help.

For right now
Life is momentary. (22:02-22:15)
Bryan’s life change in an instant. Now he pays closer attention to the good moments.
For this week
List the things that make you feel alive. (16:07-17:07)
For this season of your life
Say thank you before it’s too late.(10:50-12:53)
Bryan’s mum had a profound impact on his life, but he never thanked her. Now he wishes he could get 10 minutes back to tell her.

what do you deeply value and how do you know?
When I think about the moments that make me feel most alive, they always seem to connect back to three values that sit at the heart of who I am and strive to be.
These values are connection, curiosity, and passion.
For me, connection comes alive in the small but powerful moments I share with others. There’s nothing quite like the big belly laughs with people I love, the kind that leave your cheeks sore and your heart full. I feel equally inspired when I’m around friends or colleagues I admire. Their energy lifts me up and reminds me of the importance of surrounding myself with people who bring out the best in me.
When my friendships and relationships are respectful and meaningful, I can be my authentic self and I feel grounded. When vulnerability and depth is missing, I notice I feel anxious, disconnected and become more self-critical, which reinforces how deeply I value authentic connection.
Curiosity shows up in my daily life in many ways. I have always had a drive to ask questions, to learn, and to keep evolving. As a kid, my questions would spur my dad into a ‘lecture mood,’ as my brothers used to call it - but I loved the lectures, and I love that I’ve inherited dad’s curiosity and love of knowledge sharing.
I feel energised when discovering a fresh idea, a new skill, or even just a new perspective. Whether it’s grappling with life’s big questions or delving into something I don’t yet know a lot about, curiosity gives me a sense of zest for life. I know I will never hold all of the world’s wisdom, but this only deepens my joy in seeking it. Each discovery I make is a spark, fuelling my curiosity to keep discovering this world we live in.
Lastly, passion is what drives me to strive for excellence, and makes the effort feel deeply fulfilling. I realise I value being passionate because it shapes the way I engage with the world. When I care deeply about something, I can’t help but throw myself into it and give it my all. I can’t imagine ever being happy in a job that doesn’t align with what I’m passionate about.
When I’m interested in doing what I love, time seems to slip away, and I often find myself wishing that I had just a little more. When I devote myself to something with all my energy and the excitement that comes with that, the satisfaction I feel is more than accomplishment. Rather, it’s a quiet witness to the passion that carries me through life.
Together, these values guide me. They remind me to connect and reach out to others, to never stop questioning, and to pursue what I love wholeheartedly. In living these values, I hope to leave a positive mark on the other people I meet and the places I pass through.
